Dahlia tubers are the underground tuberous growth of the plant that stores food and water to allow the plant to grow. They are actually quite similar to potatoes!

Dahlia tubers come in all shapes and sizes. Size doesn't matter as long as the tuber is about the size of a pinky finger. If the tuber has a body, neck, crown and eyes it should grow into a beautiful plant over the season.

Tubers will ship after danger of frost. If subjected to freezing temperatures in transit they will rot. We will monitor weather forecasts and will usually ship beginning in March. 2026.

Open the package immediately and inspect your tubers for damage. Keep them in the bag and do not let them dry out. Store in a location that is at least 40°F degrees. You can also pot them and let them grow indoors for a month before they go in the ground if you'd like a jump start on the growing season.

Plant outdoors in spring, after all danger of frost is over and the soil has warmed to at least 60 degrees (note this is different than air temperatures). This is late-April and May for most zones.

Do not plant if the forecast predicts a prolonged period of wet weather as tubers can rot in cold, saturated soil.

• Dig a hole about 4-6" deep and wide enough for the tuber to fit.

• Place the tuber in the hole laying on its side or its cut end facing up.

• Backfill the hole, covering the tuber completely.

• To avoid tuber rot, do not water the area immediately after planting unless the soil is very dry.

• Place a tag where you plant each tuber to identify where they were planted.

• Watering: Before growth emerges, only water lightly to keep the soil from completely drying out. After shoots appear, a good rule of thumb is to water deeply at the rate of about 1 inch per week.

• Support: Dahlias benefit from support such as staking or corralling.

• Feeding: Before flowering, use a fertilizer high in nitrogen to encourage strong leafy growth. Once flowering, use a fertilizer with a lower nitrogen ratio to encourage blooming.

• Weeding: Keep weeds away from dahlias to avoid competition for water and nutrients.

Dahlias are perennial but not cold hardy. Tubers can overwinter in the ground in Zone 8 or warmer. In colder climates they can be dug up after frost and stored indoors over winter.

We only sell tubers with an intact neck and at least one visible eye. If you have any issues with the condition of your tubers on arrival please contact us within 3 days.

We can’t guarantee that they’ll grow for you because that depends on the growing conditions and care you provide them. However, we do guarantee that your dahlia will be true to variety; if not we'll replace it for you.

We practice sound sanitation methods to avoid spreading dahlia virus. We randomly test our plants each year and pull any with signs of disease.
